History

Maritime Geeta Bhawan Inc. was incorporated on 13th April 1983 under the Companies Act of the Province of New Brunswick in Canada. The Bhawan was registered as a charitable organization on 18th Jul 1996. Devotees from all over New Brunswick participate in our activities and are proud supporters of the Temple.

The Bhawan held monthly pooja and celebration for most of the Hindu festivals from inception. In the absence of a place of our own, all activities were held at private residences of devotees or at rented premises. The support and participation of all the members of the Hindu community in New Brunswick was overwhelming, and that sustained our faith and hope

It was our long-term goal to have a permanent place of worship of our own and to establish a Hindu Temple in New Brunswick. The project was planned for several years, and financial support was solicited to get the project underway.  Members of the Hindu community residing in New Brunswick, throughout Canada, England, and the USA donated funds to help the Bhawan realize its goal of building a place of worship for members of the Hindu faith. In June 1998 Dr. Ram Singhal and Mrs. Nirmal Singhal donated the purchase price of land. Members of the Hindu Community contributed or pledged close to $100,000 and the rest was borrowed from the bank.

A temple founding committee was formed to help various aspects of construction and fundraising. The planning of a Hindu Temple in Fredericton was commenced at 259 Doak Road, Fredericton. Bhumi Poojan was done in the Spring of 1999 and the Temple was completed in October 1999.

Some of the founding members of the temple were Dr. Ram and Mrs. Nirmal Singhal, Dr. K.P. and Radha Jayram, Late Dr. Ram and Mrs. Madhu Verma, Prof. Udaya and Sarita Gujar, Mr. Inder and Bena Patel, Dr. Satyanarayan and Mrs. Indra, Late Dr. Rudra Pratap and Mrs. Manorama Singh, Late Dr. Prashad and Mrs. Rambha.  In addition, there were several  devotees and families from across New Brunswick who came forward and volunteered to build the Bhawan.

Over the past several years several dedicated volunteers and families have contributed towards smooth running of the Bhawan operations. Geeta Bhawan continues to rely on the ongoing financial and volunteer support from devotees across New Brunswick to maintain and  expand to meet demands of the growing Hindu community in New Brunswick.
